BrightBooks now allows accountants and tax agents to open their clients’ HMRC Business Tax Account (BTA) directly from the MTD ITSA Return page.
This link lets you:
- View the authoritative Individual Calculation as held by HMRC
- Confirm what has been filed, without relying on in‑app calculations
- Stay compliant with HMRC’s requirement to either display the Individual Calculation or provide a link to it
Because of how HMRC’s Individual Calculations API operates (at NINO/taxpayer level) and how BrightBooks structures data (per business ID), displaying reliable per‑business calculations inside BrightBooks is not always possible. The HMRC BTA link provides a clear, unambiguous route to the official calculation.
2. Who can use this feature?
This feature is designed for:
- Accountants and tax agents using BrightBooks for MTD ITSA
- Agent users who have appropriate HMRC agent authorisation for the client
You must:
- Be logged into BrightBooks as an agent user
- Be viewing a specific MTD ITSA return that has a valid NINO attached
The link will not appear:
- On browse lists of returns
- On draft or incomplete records that do not yet have taxpayer (NINO) data assigned
3. Where the HMRC link appears
When you open a specific MTD ITSA Return in BrightBooks:
- Navigate to General Ledger → MTD ITSA
- Open the relevant MTD ITSA return record
- Under the MTD ITSA heading, in the General/Nominal Ledger section, you’ll see a button:
Button label:
View Individual Calculation on HMRC
Behaviour:
- The button opens the HMRC Business Tax Account in a new browser tab or window
- You are taken to:
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/business-account
If you do not see this button:
- Check that you are viewing a specific submitted/active return record (not just the browse list)
- Check that the return has a valid NINO linked to the taxpayer
- Check that you are logged in as an appropriate agent user
4. How the HMRC Business Tax Account link works
When you click View Individual Calculation on HMRC:
- A new tab/window opens to the HMRC Business Tax Account:
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/business-account - You follow HMRC’s standard login flow:
- Sign in using your own HMRC agent credentials
- Complete any multi‑factor authentication required by HMRC
- Once logged in, you access your client’s account through HMRC’s existing agent authorisation arrangements.
- From the BTA, you can:
- View the Individual Calculation as held by HMRC
- Confirm that the figures filed match your expectations
- Refer to this calculation if you need to validate data or explain results to your client
The HMRC BTA view is the authoritative source of the calculation. BrightBooks does not attempt to reconstruct or present this calculation inside the app for each business, avoiding potential confusion where clients have multiple businesses.
5. Conditions for the link to be visible
The View Individual Calculation on HMRC button will only be shown when all of the following are true:
- You are viewing a specific MTD ITSA return record
- The return has a valid NINO associated with the taxpayer
- You are logged in as an agent user with access to that client
The button will not be shown:
- On MTD ITSA browse pages or lists of returns
- On draft returns or partially set‑up records without taxpayer data
- For users who do not have appropriate permissions (e.g., non‑agent roles)
6. Troubleshooting
If you cannot see or use the View Individual Calculation on HMRC button:
- Check the record type
- Make sure you have opened an individual MTD ITSA return, not just the browse list.
- Check taxpayer details
- Confirm that a valid NINO is recorded for the taxpayer linked to the return.
- Check your BrightBooks role
- Ensure you are logged in with an agent role that has access to MTD ITSA features.
- Check HMRC access
- You must have HMRC agent authorisation for the client to view their BTA details once logged in.
- Browser pop‑ups/tabs
- Make sure your browser allows new tabs/windows from BrightBooks; pop‑up blocking can sometimes prevent the BTA page from opening.
If problems persist, capture the following before contacting support:
- The client name and UTR/NINO
- The BrightBooks business ID and return period
- Screenshots showing the MTD ITSA Return page (with or without the button visible)
- Any error messages or browser warnings
