What is a Supplementary VAT return in Ireland? It is an additional VAT return submitted to correct errors or omissions made in a previously filed VAT return. This might be necessary if a business discovers that it under-declared or over-declared VAT on sales or purchases, or missed reporting certain transactions.
The supplementary return provides the correct figures and ensures that the VAT liability or refund due is accurately accounted for. It is separate from the regular periodic VAT return and is submitted through the Irish Revenue's online system (ROS).
In summary, a supplementary VAT return is used to adjust and rectify a prior VAT filing to comply with VAT regulations.
We have now introduced the ability for you to generate the supplementary VAT return in BrightBooks.
From the General Ledger
Select the VAT Returns tab
Note: This does not include 'Amended' VAT Returns, which is another return type available on ROS. We have no current plans to introduce this functionality.
Note: The existing Staff Permissions to VAT Returns will also apply to Supplementary VAT Returns.
You will notice on the VAT Returns browse that we have added in an additional column, labelled 'VAT Return Type', any existing VAT returns will now be called 'Standard' VAT Returns and the new Supplementary ones will be called 'Supplementary' VAT Returns.
You will see a new button, to the right of 'New', labelled 'Supplementary'. This is the button to use to create a new supplementary VAT return. The 'New' button should be used to create Standard VAT Returns.
Note: You will only be able to create a Supplementary VAT Return for a period for which a Standard VAT Return has already been generated.
The New Supplementary VAT Return window appears. Specify the 'period until' which you want to generate the VAT return and click OK.
The return values will be generated and displayed on screen
Now, you will have the following options
- To save the data and have it displayed as a VAT return record on the VAT Return page, click Save.
- To view the VAT details in the form of the VAT Details report, click Print.
- If you are satisfied no more entries will be added to the return you generated, you should tick Closed on the VAT Return window. This means that you are no longer allowed to update the VAT returns for the period you generated. We advise you to use this option carefully. Update to 'Closed' when you are submitting these figures to Revenue.
- to delete the return, click 'Delete'. You will only be allowed to delete a return which is not closed. We only recommend deleting a VAT Return if it has not been submitted to Revenue yet.
Note 1: You can only generate a supplementary return for a period where the standard return is Closed.
Deleting a supplementary VAT Return
Please note, you cannot delete a standard return for a period where a supplementary return exists; you must first delete the supplementary return.
If you need to delete a standard VAT Return, you will need to delete the Supplementary VAT Return for that period first by following the steps below:
Navigate to General Ledger, VAT Return.
Look for the period you need to delete with the VAT Return type as Supplementary.
Click on the dropdown for this Supplementary VAT Return and click the Delete option.
Once complete, the Standard VAT Return can also be deleted.

The VAT Return Report will display supplementary returns in the available list with (supplementary) after the period dates.
